The works presented in Motherhood, were made by newborn mums throughout a dedicated Mums and Bubs workshop series facilitated by Troppo Print Studio, with the support of Merri-Bek Council. 

Each week Mums and babies in arm gathered exploring themes of fragility and strength, and all the biological and psychological changes that occur in the process of becoming a mother. 

The project sprung out of a period of deep unabridged introspection in 2024 paired with a strong reaction to The Backyard Projects screenprint, ‘Promise’ viewed in the Megalo Print Studio, Kanberri, during a residency.

The Backyard Project, saw mums and bubs gather in various locations, to contemplate their experiences, and the challenges of being a new mum, channeling that energy, questioning and simultaneous strength and fragility into the collaborative posters they made, just like ‘Promise'.

Alongside this are paintings by Lucy Maddox, in her series, Lucy Maddox explores the bond between parent and child - the love, protection, and weight of responsibility that come with motherhood.
