Hysterical Legacies
A collaborative visual arts project and exhibition
Hysterical Legacies responds to the ongoing impact of historically sexist narratives—particularly those surrounding the stereotype of the “hysterical woman”—and how these legacies continue to shape the present-day experiences of women and non-binary people in relation to health and wellbeing.
Featuring artworks by chronically ill, disabled, and neurodivergent women, femmes, and non-binary artists, the exhibition uncovers the often-hidden or silenced stories within our communities. It aims to center lived experiences and challenge the ways in which medical systems and societal attitudes have pathologised, dismissed, or ignored women's and non-binary people’s health concerns.
As conversations about women’s health gain visibility, we remain in a time of contradiction: increasing awareness and advocacy exist alongside persistent global threats to bodily autonomy. Hysterical Legacies draws critical connections between past and present, between social attitudes, medical practices, and the politics of illness, pain, and care.
