Ada May (Bickford) Norris CMG, DBE (28 July 1901-1989) was a women’s rights activist and community worker. She was educated at Melbourne High School and The University of Melbourne, where she graduated MA Dip.Ed. She married the future judge John Norris. Ada Norris was involved in numerous committees and organisations promoting women, multiculturalism, children, the aged, the physically handicapped and immigration. She was made Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George while President of the National Council of Women of Australia in 1969. She founded the UNAA National Status of Women network in 1974 which became the national International Women’s Year Committee. She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire on 22 June 1976 for distinguished community service. Dame Ada Norris was awarded The University of Melbourne’s LLD. Honoris Causa in 1980.
