ABOUT the QUEEN VICTORIA WOMEN’S CENTRE

The Queen Victoria Women’s Centre is an iconic Melbourne landmark that supports women through creative experiences, community resources and the power of connection. We program creative events onsite, online and around Victoria, have beautiful venues available to hire, and offer space to like-minded organisations. We are by women, for women – always. Built in 1848 as the original Melbourne Hospital, the building became the Queen Victoria Hospital in 1946 – one of only three hospitals in the world founded, managed and staffed by women. In 1994, the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre Trust Act 1994 was passed by the Victorian Parliament. In creating the Centre, the State of Victoria dedicated the land and the building to services and facilities for women including health information services, rest and meeting rooms.

HISTORY

OUR TRUST

SHILLING WALL

Activities at the Centre are underpinned by three guiding principles:

Vision

To be both iconic destination and women’s centre without walls. Our work is to enable, recognise and support the well-being and human rights of women from all walks of life by creating and sharing cultural experiences of many kinds.

Purpose

To bring the women of Victoria together by supporting space(s) in which networks and relationships are nurtured for social cohesion and participation.

Values

For women. By women. Wellbeing through networks. Fun. Respect through empathy. Courage. Innovation. Inclusion.

Accessibility The Centre delivers on these principles via four strategic initiatives:

  1. The creation of cultural experiences that nurture networks among women.

  2. By becoming a women’s centre with and without walls. QVWC will always be home to organisations that provide services for people who identify as women but we’ll extend beyond our walls through outreach events and new digital offerings.

  3. Development of a sustainable business model that maximises our position as a unique, affordable and beautiful heritage venue in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD.

  4. Anticipating and planning a “women’s centre of the future”.
