Women and Money

Women’s economic security and financial health is affected by gender differences, research tells us that Australian women:

  •  Earn 18% less than men
  • Retire with up to 50% less superannuation than men
  • Live 5 years longer than men
  • Are less comfortable with debt than men
  • Are less confident investors than men

We know that women are interested in learning more about planning for their financial future, including their retirement; and yet only 7 Australian consumer and financial literacy initiatives (out of over 700) targeted the specific challenges faced by women.

The Queen Victoria Women's Centre (QVWC) believes that targeted women’s financial literacy education programs are vital to closing the money gap, boosting women’s knowledge and confidence in money management and planning to secure a healthy financial future.

From 2008 to 2010 the QVWC worked in partnership with the Victorian Governments’ Office for Women’s Policy and WIRE women’s Information to develop and deliver the Women’s Financial Literacy Program.

Over three years 2,678 Victorian women participated in the partnership program which developed and delivered:

  • 81 FREE ‘Steps to Securing Your Financial Future’ Workshops across Victoria sharing essential money management information, practical tools, activities and resources for women.

  • 40 FREE ‘Women & Money’ Seminars in Melbourne, Traralgon and Geelong providing independent information on a range of financial topics across women’s life stages.

The QVWC is currently seeking ‘like minded’ organisations to collaborate with us to continue the ‘Women & Money Seminar’ program and build women’s economic security and financial health.
