Having worked for others all my life I am taking control and starting my own business. I am 58.

I am taking control of the voices in my head that tell me I’m fat, ugly and stupid, because I’m sick of them dictating my life.” *

Queen Victoria Women’s Centre is calling on women to contribute to the unique, anonymous community art exhibition, ’Note to Herself’ by creating a postcard expressing their inner voice on the areas of their lives over which they would like to take control. Inspired by the phenomenal Post Secrets project, (one of America’s most popular blogs), the Note to Herself project will culminate in an exhibition of hundreds of postcards at the Note to Herself Gallery at QV as part of International Women’s Day celebrations from February 19 until March 9.

Self Harm

Over 10,000 blank postcards, distributed in cafes, cinemas and museums across Victoria from mid January, will form the canvas for women to paint, collage or draw on to anonymously share their secret desires for control in their lives. (Any card can be submitted as long as it is standard postcard size.) Postcards will be sent to QVWC, Level 1, 210 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne to form the exhibition, at the Note to Herself Gallery at QV,
18 -22 Artemis Lane.

Postcards will be accepted for inclusion until 1 March 2007.

Note to Herself was adapted from a project initiated by American, Frank Warren, who invited strangers to anonymously mail their secrets on postcards to his home. Warren has received over 80,000 secrets from around the world which he updates weekly on his blog, http://postsecret.blogspot.com

As part of International Women’s Day 2007 at QVWC, Note to Herself offers therapeutic relief to the creators of the postcards as well as exhibition goers as they see inside the headspace of those who may secretly struggle with the same issue.

The Note to Herself Gallery at QV will also offer space for women to create their postcards anonymously and contribute to the exhibition. The growing exhibition will continuously expand as more postcards are received, with a view to touring the exhibition across the country.

Take part in Note to Herself by creating a postcard and anonymously sharing that aspect of your life over which you want to take control, or by visiting the exhibition.
