Getting the Balance Right - Start the Conversation

If you want to see policies and practices changed, first you have to start a conversation. Whether you’re a board member, staff member or manager, discussing the potential benefits of family friendly policies is a great way to initiate change.

Starting the Conversation with an Information Session

An international development agency wanted to make sure they incorporated family friendly practices. They started by reviewing their existing staff manual and thinking about options for improvement. They then held an information session for all staff to explore the options together. The staff enjoyed the session and felt that most of their needs were already being met. As their work involves a lot of overseas travel, an operational issue that emerged was the need for their accrual of time off in lieu (TOIL) to be better managed. This was identified as an area that needed more work.
