Getting the Balance Right - Breastfeeding at Work

Breastfeeding needs vary according to the individual and the age of the baby. The following measures can

help women to successfully combine breastfeeding and work:

1. Lactation breaks

to express breastmilk, feed the baby at work or go to feed the baby at home/childcare.

2. Facilities

needed include a clean, hygienic and private area with a sink, a refrigerator/freezer and somewhere to store related equipment.

3. Flexible work options

could include telecommuting, job sharing, permanent part-time and flexible starting and finishing times.

4. Support from employers and colleagues

is crucial. Employers could inform all staff about such policies at the time maternity leave is requested. This would alleviate employee anxiety and encourage their return to work.
